The UN Guiding Principles on Business and Human Rights: Implementing the United Nations “Protect, Respect and Remedy” Framework (Guiding Principles) outline global standards for preventing and addressing business-related human rights harm and have gained wide support by States, the private sector, as well as civil society. There have been calls to develop National Action Plans (NAPs) that are consistent with the Guiding Principles.
In September 2014, the ASEAN Senior Officials for Agriculture and Forestry (SOM AMAF) endorsed a proposal jointly submitted by UN Global Compact and the ASEAN CSR Network on “Leveraging Business in ASEAN for Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture”. Under this proposal, ACN and UNGC will collaborate to optimise the contribution of the ASEAN business community to realise the objectives of the Strategic Plan of Action for Food Security for the ASEAN region and the effectiveness of the ASEAN Integrated Food Security (AIFS) Framework.
Corruption unnecessarily adds to the cost of doing business. According to the World Bank estimates, corruption adds up to 10% to the total cost of doing business globally, and up to 25% to the cost of procurement contracts in developing countries. With the Regional Working Group on Business Integrity recently established, the ASEAN CSR Network looks to better enable business networks to prevent and combat corruption through collective action.
